Cobus Men

TOM COBUS

My family has been in this part of the Ottawa Valley for generations, and for all of that time, the Cobus name has been associated with a hard, honest day’s work.  Working the land and everything on it has been a hallmark over the years, so I guess it should come as no big surprise that I would follow in the footsteps of so many of my family and become a builder.  As was my father before me, so am I.

I love what I do, and the sense of accomplishment that comes along with it.  And I love my home and family, something that I suppose can be evidenced by the fact that I live on land that has been in my family for a long time.  The land I grew up on, and the land that I call home.  Everything, for me, just seems right.  The way it should be.

I like to think I bring much of this good feeling to my home building.  When I begin a project, I like to envision how the people who will live there will interact not only with the finished home, but also with the environmental situation that home is part of.  It’s location, how it’s oriented with respect to the sun, vantage points, service requirements, all of these and more go into my creative thought before a shovel goes into the ground, or a nail is hammered home.  And while the structure takes shape, that creativity evolves to where, hopefully, a very happy and excited family moves into a finished product.

In keeping with the family approach to building, I’m also fortunate to have available to me the expertise of my uncle, Andy Cobus, who on his own is a respected craftsman with over thirty years of experience, and a specialist when it comes to timber framing.  Andy is the ultimate perfectionist, something that can be seen in all of his efforts, and it’s his fine detail that separates the Cobus name from the work of others.
